TR6 TR-6 TIRES

Good Morning,
I just purchased a TR6 that has been in storage for 20 years. I would like to change out the original Red Lines, I have heard allot of controversy in what tire brand & size to run on the car. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, I plan on driving this car not showing it

Thanks

Hello Mr. Pile

You'll likely get lots of opinions, shrouded as fact, so good luck. I have on BFG Touring TA,
205/70s. They sure look nice, filling up that wheel well, but, when they're worn am planning to move back into a skinnier size. Seems like the steering is heavy enough already, and this makes it more so at low speeds. Also it seems that there is too much grip; I am not getting the back end to break loose in turns, which takes all the fun out. Maybe though, that's a function of having turned into an old man and simply no longer driving that hard.

Gut,
I, like Paul, am running 205/70 tires on my TR6. I am currently riding on Pirelli P4000 touring tires. They look great, wear poorly, and lose traction on wet surfaces due to the light weight of the car and so much tread surface. There are, unfortunately, no high performance tires available for this size (I have 15x6 Panasport wheels). I would like something with a stiff side wall and aggressive tread pattern but would have to go to a different size tire. Touring=minivan.
Narrower may be the key, Paul.

I run Goodyear AquaTred 4's (205/70-15 on 15 x 6 Revolutions) and the handling is great. Although the Goodyears aren't "sport" tires, their wet and dry traction ratings, as well as tread wear, are unmatched by any other tire. Cost is very reasonable from the TireRack.

My vote is Yoko, they sell a great 205/65 15 that gives you a more aggressive stance. I run 185/65 15 on my tr4 and love them. If you plan to run wirewheels take care to remove any tags on the inside of the new tires. these will chafe your tubes in no time.

I agreee with Mad Dog. I run Yokohama Avid T4's (P205/70 R15) on my 74 TR 6. They look good and ride great. I bought my car 3 yrs ago and it had red lines on it. Your won't believe the difference in handling that a set of modern tires will make

The tires still look new, and the price was right.

I have Yokohama Avid S/Ts on my '69 Corvette, and at $47 per tire (compared to the $85 BF Goodrich tires that most muscle car guys run...or the $300 Goodyear Eagle runflats on my 2002 vette,) these tires are unbelievable. The traction is outstanding -- better than any other tires I have tried short of extreme summer performance tires.)

I'm sold on Yokohamas, and wouldn't hesitate to put them on any sports car.

Also bear in mind that any modern minivan touring tire is probably better than what the TR6's came on. The original Redlines weren't exactly R compounds............

I've have some 205/60R15's laying in my garage I'm thinking about putting on my TR6. They came off my wife's Mazda 626 and would be much cheaper than buying right now. Does anyone think those are too low of a profile for a TR6? If anyone is running 60's, do they fill up your wheel wells?

Guys,
I just put some new rubber on my TR6 today. I went with 205/70 Michelin Hydroedge mounted on my 15" Panasports. Outstanding tires! Grip like crazy, especially on wet pavement. I must have put 100 miles on them already and have to say that I am satisfied with my choice.

A 60 series tire should still be ok...won't be quite as tall, but it should be fine. Will certainly play a little with your gear ratio! I'm not sure I'd do it if you're already running something like a 4.11 with no overdrive.

If you go to Costco, they'll mount and balance all four for $44, so it's not a huge risk. If you don't like them, you can always change out.

This site has a tech article about tires and a tire size calc, (there are several on the web). https://www.sctoa.org/. The 205/60R15 will not fill your wheel well, I think they are about 2 inches smaller than the original tires. I am running 195/65R15 on TR6 rims on my TR4. While these are bit smaller than the original 165 Michelins they don't look to bad. I also have 3.7 rear end with and OD so engine revs are not a problem with slightly smaller tires.

Just remember that unless you restore to 'original' specs the car should be driven with common sense.Fancy name tyres are nice but maybe way beyond the car's capabilities. How are your brakes suspension etc.?

If you use the 195/60/15's, your car will look like it is on roller skates. I went through this. I ordered this size, got the tires, mounted them, and then cried. I sent them back, got 205/70's, and the look is great and very aggressive.

Thanks for bringing up the topic. I'm particularily interested if anyone has experince with running 16 inch wheels and lower profile tires?

thanks in advance,
Jeff
