TR2/3/3A TR-3a Steering Box rebuild question

Hi,
I am rebuilding the steering box on my 1960 Triumph TR-3a. What is the clearance range between therocker shaft and the bronze bushing? Ihave measured mine at .0025”. Is that toomuch?

That sounds very close to me. Can you feel wobble with your fingers? Some say the new bushing does not need any honing, but all the ones I have put in do. Look very close at the shaft to see if the top is not twisted and is at 90 degrees and that the lower splines are not twisted also. You probably know about to see if the pin is not too worn.

I can feel wobble in the shaft. I replaced the bronze bushing this morning and it will need to be reamed. I am replacing the rocker shaft, races andbearings as well. The worm gear looksnew, it might have been replaced before the car sat for 30 years.

I have used a brake honing tool before and some emery fine cloth rolled up also. I would suggest when you start getting close to a perfect fit to clean both surfaces up and maybe some light oil and put the shaft in it tight. It is just so easy to go too far and get what feels like too much play again and IMO the 2 lap in quickly. I believe the difficulty is because of the long bore and imperfections in the shaft. I have never tried a new shaft that could be a whole different story.
