TR2/3/3A TR 3 Steering Upgrade.

I’m looking to upgrade to rack and pinion steering. Moss has a kit but it’s a little pricey. Anyone know of a good alternative? Has anyone converted the entire front end using a Mustang ll kit?

I recently installed a R&P conversion from Bastuck in Germany. This kit allows you to keep the control head functions (turn signals and horn) although the control head turns with the steering wheel.
(Note: the R&P mounts are incorrectly labelled - see pic - apparently the entire inventory is wrong!)

Hi fellas…. Actually, I’m very interested in this thread… a R&P conversion is at the top of my wish list….
Thanks

I installed the MOSS kit, my friend installed the kit from Germany. Both kits, once installed will cause bump steer and you have to do adjustments to get that taken care off. I think the German kit is probably better. I don't like the way the clamps on the MOSS kit did not hold it in place well. Also, MOSS kit does require you to figure out a turn signal. (I used one from a MGB)

I am in the process of designing a kit that allows retaining the stock fan and eliminates the bump steer issues.
My prototype is nearly finished and was jigged up on a working Tr3. It is aligned with the position of the
original drag link assy and should be incredibly easy to install.( 6 bolts) I will post pictures soon. It also uses a Mini rack
( rt drive) flipped around to steer LT drive. I am using the fast ratio rack. You will have to raise the motor a massive
3/16 of an inch to accommodate mounting plate, it beats adding bump steer........

Mad Dog, does your prototype allow use of the original turn signal control? When do you expect it to be a available? I can deal with raising the engine by 3/16"... Bill

In all cases, the control head is used only a dummy and a switch is added to the dash. Much as the Sprites used
in the MKI series. I am yet to finish the first prototype installation. Then there would be a jig to fix up. So no ideas
as to when I can make them up. I supposed I have watched too much Project Binky, and like to fab up stuff. We shall
see what evolves from this idea. Fun so far.

My brother has done the conversion a couple times using a TR7 rack, which is apparently narrower (minus tie rods) than the TR4-6 rack and a better fit in the early TRs. Steering is super light, almost too light in my opinion, probably needs a little castor added in. I know that is not a lot of information, I think some fabrication is needed, but not a huge job, I know that is not a lot of information other than showing it can be done

The original trafficators can continue to be used with the Bastuck slip ring setup. I’ve installed two.
