TR2/3/3A TR-3 steering column worm gear removal.

I have to remove a TR-3 steering box column worm gear that has a damage bearing race on it and install a replacement worm gear.

Does anyone know the proper method to do this? Suggestions welcome.

Thanks, John

Aloha John,

This has been discussed before. The worm is held inplace with a combination of splines about 1 inch long on the end of the inner steering shaft and worm and a swedge at the end of the inner steering column. A search of the Triumph forum using the word "worm" going back about 3 years will guide you to those discussions. I'm sure either "TR3driver" or "TexasKnucklehead" will be along soon to share their expertise in this.

John,

Taking the old one off isn't too difficult. I'm pretty sure you can find pictures and a description of how I managed to remove several, using the search function. The hard part is getting the new one back on. I think I know how, and have a good worm and good shaft, but hadn't got around to it. My best guess is that the worm needs to be heated (to about 350 degrees), then slid onto the shaft and allowed to cool slowly, followed by peening -unless you want to forge ahead with a swedge.

Mind you, it is held on pretty tightly, and you want it to end that way. If you think I can help in any way, PM me. And let us know what and how you did.

Jer

HI, I want to thank both Dave and Jerry for your guidance to past posts on the steering worm gear replacement. I can see what to do and what not to do now.

I'll let you all know how I make out and what I did.

Thanks again, John
