TR2/3/3A TR-3 Hardtop on eBay

That looks like a Triumph hard top. Moss lists the backlight for about $365. I remember them being plastic. That one would be worth trying to polish out. I'm going to watch this.

I thought that the hardtops made by Triumph are steel.

I was refering to the backlight as being plastic. Yes, now that you mention it, maybe the original tops themselves are of steel. Now I see that he lists the top itself as being fiberglass. That'll teach me to read things more carefully.

Edit: I'll call my buddy who has an original H/T and ask him if it is fiberglass or steel. Maybe they were fiberglass. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif I had one 30 years ago, and IIRC it was fiberglass. I'm sure someone will set us straight on this.

OK, I looked in my reprint of the original service manual in the appendix concerning installation of the hardtop. It states...

" The "Hard Top" is of pressed steel construction..."

It also lists all the parts in the "Hard Top" kit.

The backlight is part #553132...made of Perspex...not glass.

If it was original it would go for mega $$$...problem is even fiberglass it's local pickup only...good deal if ya live close!!

I have an original TR3 hard top. It is made of steel and the window is marked Persplex (like plexiglas). The mounting kits are NLA and when I've seen two on ebay sell for upwards of $300 for a NOS kit.

If it's fiberglass, it's not original but the top on ebay does look correct otherwise. Even the mounting tabs on the ebay top are correct and I'd bet if you ask him to put a magnet on it, it would stick. A great but for someone as these are usually in the $1000 range for a compete top in good condition.

I was lucky to find a NOS kit a couple of years ago but I'm not sure if I will fit the top tp my 3A or just keep the soft top.

As you can see from my Icon I have a hardtop, the Roasdster Factory has the fitting and MOSS UK has the backlight.

As I recall, the very first "factory" hardtops were "fibreglas"; I don't recall when they changed to steel. Lou?

Interesting, have to check piggott on this one.

Hi Russ,

Are you able to keep the softtop frame in place and still add the hardtop? Or would I have to remove the softtop sticks when I install my hardtop. We'd really like to run the hardtop in the fall but have the flexibility in the summer months -- I mean week!

btw- I didn't see the hardtop kit on TRF but their site is really not suited for searching hard to find items like that.

Nice to hear from you Peter, wife and I are in St. Augustine, Fl with the TR3. Just got back from dinner, and logged on. The hood stick stays on, its not a problem. You may need to call TRF, the headliner # 556034/HL, I did a search and could not find the part # so I say call and see what they say. If not I'm sure MOSS UK has them.

Have a great time in FL. I'll check TRF for the HL - thanks for the p/n.

Cathy wull probably look you up when she goes to Evansville this summer to visit her family.

Bill Piggott states "originally introduced in October 1954, made in polyester resin - later the same style of hardtop was manufactured in steel. Both types usually had perpex rear windows, but some glass ones exist."

So the ebay top is very early. I learn more everday about these cars.

Hey all -

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but I have an aftermarket fiberglass top for a TR3, in pretty rough shape, and am offering it to anyone who would like it - just pick up or pay to ship. It will need a good cleaning and paint, new window (not wraparound, just a flat piece), seals, and mounting hardware. It's taking up room here and will probably toss it, if no one wants it.

Mickey, I sent you a PM on that top. Rick

Didn't get the PM, Rick - check yours.

Someone early in the thread asked about the change from fiberglass to steel. My old one TS8651 (which had gotten stripped for racing around 1960)apparently had a fiberglass one with no soft top. There were no holes in the interior trim pieces where the top bow should bolt on. The first owner supposedly used it for rallies and hillclimbs back east and sold it to the guy I used to work for, who in turn removed the top and turned it into a SCCA production car.

If Rick doesn't pan out, list me as #2 interested in the top
