Looks like I will be going to Flordia to pick-up my Bugeye. I have a 1 ton van and a double axle car trailer that is big enough to carry a Oldsmobile. Trailer is so large I was thinking of down sizing. What about renting a car dolly once I got to flordia to put bug eye on, Any one ever towed a bugeye with a car dolly. It will be all interstate driving (11 hours each way).

Is transmission ok to free wheel with out removing Drive shaft?

I have towed many times with a dolly, but do disconnect the driveshaft.
4 bolts, just bring two 1/2" open end wrenches with you.

I have towed a bugeye on a rental car car dolly. Reverse the front wheels to increase the front tread width. In other words, take the front wheels off and reinstall them with the outside of the wheel facing in toward the center of the car. The car will fit on the car dolly ramps much better. Disconnect the drive
shaft for sure. (don't ask me how I know) To secure the loose end of the drive shaft use a couple of stout bungee cords.

I've not done this but I seem to recall that there are two sizes of car dolly from UHaul

I would go with the car trailer. If you have a wheel
bearing failure - you're stuck.With the trailer,nothing's
on the ground,so you eliminate possible problems.
If you have a problem while towing with a dolly, you've
got more expenses, + more time. The price of the tow dolly
would probably be about the same as the extra expense of
gas with the trailer.

Hi There mighty midget,

I`ve towed a ton of cars with a car dolly & never had any problems.

Probably the most important thing (That alot of people overlook); Is check the dimension on the "INSIDE" of your tires!

Many of the rental car dollys are quite wide & not adjustable enough to accomodate the "SMALL-NARROW" width dim`s. between the "INSIDE" of the tires.

Have Fun,

Russ

I flat towed mine from Florida to Ohio. Only problem was that it was easy to forget it was there.

I like the trailer too. Much more control than the dolly. Besides, you can even back it if you need to.

I called U-haul, thought I might fly in rent a truck & trailer....over a grand to rent.
so I am paying someone to go get for me this week-end. I was going to rent them a dolly, but decided to go with trailer, but one persons trailer I was going to borrow, said no way since I was not directly using trailer, the other one I use is loaned out for a week maybe sold, and the third and last one I want to borrow, has two shredded tires from the last person who borrowed it. so I may be going back to dolly.

I have only seen one photo of this car and I am really buying blind.

A Spridget will fit on a Uhaul car trailer, but just barely. The limiting factor is the width between the trailer deck plates, which corresponds to the inside width between the Spridget wheels. 42inches is the magical dimension here!
You also need to be careful when loading as the low ground clearance on a Spridget could cause the undercarriage to hang up on the rear trailer edge. (Usually OK for a stock Spridget, but if the car is lowered clearance might be an issue...)

One-way rentals can be expensive (not always, but usually), but local rentals (no mileage limit) are usually pretty cheap!

FOR EXAMPLE:
I can rent a tow dolly here in Savannah next week for $39.95/day. OR
I can rent an auto transport trailer for $49.95/day.
The trailer is WELL WORTH the extra $10/day! (IMHO)

I always use extra straps.
-I don't trust the Uhaul straps.
-Spridget wheels are a bit too close to inner edge of trailer deck plates for Uhaul straps to work properly.
-Extra straps are CHEAP insurance.

ONE MORE NOTE: For one-way rentals check prices at Penske. Usually MUCH Cheaper! (& better equipment, IMHO)
