Towing question

Never would have guessed I'd post this question on BCF, but with the earlier thread on trucks for towing I thought I might test the waters. My girlfriend and I are scouting around for pop-up campers, but we're both faced with the disadvantage of not having hefty towing vehicles. I have a Honda CR-V, and she has a Subaru Legacy wagon. The Subaru has the better capacity by the book (2700 pounds with trailer brakes), but she has an automatic transmission and no oil cooler. I have a manual transmission and mine is rated at 1500 pounds with trailer brakes, but I have heard of several other CR-V owners towing considerably more, since the U.K. model is rated for towing 1500 Kg. Yes, that's kilograms, not pounds, and it's not a typo. Now I'm obviously not considering towing near that much, and the camper we're looking at is 2200 pounds fully loaded, 1300 pounds empty. Anybody have any thoughts on how detrimental it would be while staying under 2000 pounds? Ideally we'd like to not be limited to one car, and we do plan on getting electric brakes on the camper.
