Will I have a problem with this? I will be using a 2002 Pathfinder to tow this and the U-haul guy thinks there may be an issue.

I need info ASAP!! Pretty Please with sugar on top.

Re: Tow Dolly for MGB GT - Is there A clearance issue.

If you do use the dolly - DISCONNECT THE DRIVESHAFT!!!!

I've used them & had guys come over with them...if its one from U-Haul, it'll work...just be careful fitting the front tires on it...& air the rear ones up to the max...but, I've not seen anybody drag anything...

Oh, did I say DISCONNECT THE DRIVESHAFT"?

Re: Tow Dolly for MGB GT - Is there A clearance is

when i bought the 76 B, i used a UHAul tow dolly to pick it up. towed it with a '95 4Runner. clearance was not an issue.

How far do you have to tow it?

I hate to admit it, but I did not disconnect the driveshaft as was recommended to me.

I did not have far to go, and made sure the diff was full before leaving.

I guess i got lucky. everything went fine.

you shouldn't have any problems, but do disconnect the driveshaft.

Re: Tow Dolly for MGB GT - Is there A clearance is

I have a 1995 Pathfinder and have used a tow dolly a couple of times for both an MGB and an MGA. Also with a Jeep Cherokee. No problems with either one.

I always disconnect the drive shaft from the differential, even for short distances.

Re: Tow Dolly for MGB GT - Is there A clearance is

I'm only going 68 miles from Jersey to NY. Driveshaft is simple right? Couple of bolts & out it should slide?

Re: Tow Dolly for MGB GT - Is there A clearance is

Just disconnect the bolts at the rear where it attaches to 3rd member -

I'll second that motion to disconnect the DS if you are going to tow it any distance at all. I have never had a problem with towing a B before but there is one sitting in my shop right now that lunched the overdrive unit after having been towed in about 1500 miles. I cannot say positively that the OD failed because of that but for money involved I wouldn't take a chance. The inside of the gear box looks fine and the car pulled itself down the road just great for about five miles after I got it running ( the reason that it came in in the first place) but after a brief rest when it was taken back out all heck broke loose, literally. I *thought* that the problem in towing without the driveshaft being disconnected ended up with the front bearing(s)of the transmission being damaged through a lack of lubrication due to the angle of the transmission (all of the oil would be to the rear of the case).

Then again...I have been wrong before. Too many times to count.

Re: Tow Dolly for MGB GT - Is there a clearance is

We made up a rig specifically for flat towing B's many years ago. Uses the bumper mounting bolts thru the front of the frame. If the tow was more than a few miles the driveshaft got uncoupled from the diff and WELL safety wired UP. Never "tested" the theory it was "okay" to drag 'em around with the output shaft spinning as the "input" shaft... Call me gutless. Seen too many layshafts with NORMAL wear 'n tear! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Tow Dolly for MGB GT - Is there a clearance is

It's called - "peace of mind" - hence disconnect it, I say.

Re: Tow Dolly for MGB GT - Is there a clearance is

I always flat tow...yes, when the front end of the 3rd member is tipped up in the air & is spinning, it doesn't get 'oiled' - as I understand it....disconnecting the driveshaft takes all load off that front bearing so it just turns free. (I think)

My brain is fried...I've been on the phone for hours with a person in the Phillipines trying to get a Linksys wireless extender working...when I pressed '1' for help in English, foolish me thought I would be able to understand them! & my problem stil isn't solved...supposedly, they'll call me back in an hour!

I've got some Tagalog cuss words in the hopper iffen you need 'em, but that might not be the best way to get their help... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Re: Tow Dolly for MGB GT - Is there a clearance is

Hear's the deal condenced, dis connect the drive shaft at the rear (four bolts) wire it up under the car out of the way (this keeps oil in the transmission). So nothing turns but the rear end, no big deal. Towed a Bugeye thousands of miles going from Station to station while in the military. Never ever tore up a transmission in 25 years of daily driveing and towing.

I thought when I pushed "1" in response to the statement, "Push 1 if you want assistance in English" that it meant they would speak English, not me!

Re: Tow Dolly for MGB GT - Is there a clearance is

Thanks all. I believe i'll be getting a trailer anyhoo, if U-haul is telling me the truth. Still bringing a bunch of "in case of's" depending on how bad she is.
