Torquing crankshaft bolt

What's the best way to torque the crank bolt without just rotating the engine?

I could stick a piece of 2x4 in the crakcase and wedge it between the block and crank, but I'm afraid I'll crack the block with the high torque needed.

I stuck a piece of 2X4 - worked fine.
 
OK the 2x4 worked fine to put 70 ft lbs on the crank bolt.

But what if you don't have the oil pan off?
 
Then it becomes a bit more trickie, You feed a length of rope into one of the spark plug holes so when you turn the engine the rope stops it from turning. Then as you have carefully left a bit hanging out of the plug hole you pull it out after your torque the bolt.
 
or you jam the flywheel
