Torque settings

Just want to make sure as the Haynes manual only list the torque values for the 18g while I have an 18v

Rod bolts 35 to 40#
Main bearings 70#'s

I set them to 38# and 70# respectively.

38 pounds on a 18V rod bolt is too much, stock 11/32' 18V rod bolts are 33 ft lbs, and ARP 11/32" bolts are 35 ft lbs. Hope this helps.

Wow the books states 35-40 so I split the difference. Is this something that has been decided upon after years of working on them?

Different manauls may state different thing but remember when looking at the manual, you have two different rod bolt sizes for two different style MGB connecting rods, you have the 11/32" bolts that go in all of the straight rods, and then you have the 3/8" rod bolt that come in the early slanted rods, tha take around 10 pounds more torque. I have a buddy who looked at the wrong specs and tried torqued his 11/36" rod bolt to the 3/8" specs and the torque wrnech would click, so I told him more than likely he had stretched the rod bolts, and had to replace them. So this is something you don't want to use the wrong specs on.
