For anyone interested, or for those who enjoyed "Fifth Gear" showing on the Speed Channel, another British auto related show "Top Gear" is showing on the Discovery Channel starting as of last night:

Yeah, I caught the last half of that last night. Looked pretty good. Tested Jag XKR vs BMW 640 vs 911, doing wing dings on the fabled Pennine Sands (What would Sir Malcolm say?), tear assing around Wales, etc. Oh to be a wealthy public school boy!

It was a pretty fun show. I enjoyed the Exige versus the Apache helicopter bit they did. Those guys have just way too much fun.

Seems like a cool show - I came in about half way through the show when they were driving the "Wildcat" monster around. And infact started to nod off during the Maserati segment.

So did the Apache get a lock on the sports car? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Final score:
Hellfire 1, Exige 0.

Top Gear have a habit of taking the unusual approach. Last weeks show they decided to test which car had better all round performance, a 911 or the latest Merc two seater.

They 'borrowed' a dozen Marines and a deserted town used for military exercises. Equipped them with a laser rifle system that would register hits on a special flack jacket. The presenter, Jeremy Clarkson, then donned said flack jacket and drove at high speed around the town. The theory being that the best car was the one in which he got shot less. The 911 won 6-13!

The helicopter only got lock on the car when it was allowed to back off from the car a ways. For the first part of the segment they made the helicopter remain fairly close to the car, and it never managed a lock.

Saw it last night n- Aston Martin vs Train London to Monte Carlo - car won by an hour. Wonderful show.

I have my digital video recorder set to record both 5th gear and Top Gear.

I find both of these shows to be so much more interesting and entertaining than the American shows. Mostly because they flog the cars more, they're more honest (advertising kick-back perks aren't as important,) and they have a better sense of humor.

Sammy, you need to dress in some checkerboard pants, a 70's silk shirt, find a driving cap and lean on one of those cars for the photo. Also be sure to put up a "Sammy's Used Cars" sign out front.

Here's Sam and his dog Spot!

If you want a car or truck, go see sam
If you want to save a buck, go see sam
If you want an old sports car
You need not travel far
Go see Sam Go See Sam Go See Sam

(Old west coast types will know I stole that from Cal Worthington!)

The White Corvette goes to its new owner on Tuesday! I'll be back down to 3 cars in the garage, and one outside in the temp garage.

"I'll stand on my head 'till my ears are turning red!"

Funny how a used car lot commercial can be remembered by millions of people 30 years later. That guy was a geeneeus!

Yeah, but also a real crook. Was convicted on many counts of fraud if memory serves.

He was the original "bait and switch" dealer.

I think the Feds finally ran him out of the car biz in the mid 1980s

Is that right? I had no idea! He was always so happy with that big cowboy hat and all those animals. He even had an elephant once! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yeah, I remember the Elephant! (Still "his dog spot")
