...on the porch to suck down the first ciggy of the day when the quiet was interrupted by a loud pounding sound. We have NCANG C130's flying over the house at times and I thought that's what I was hearing. But then sounds from my youth took over and I knew I was hearing multiple large radials. Sure enough, a B29 at about 800'' to 1000' is coming straight overhead.
What a rush!
An hour later, more heavy radials and a B24 flies over.

Carolina's Aviation Museum has a few planes visiting for Memorial Day, and without leaving home, I seen two of them doing a flyover.

Memorial Day is observed here in honor of all who served and especially for my uncle, Oscar Lee (Bud) Cagle, a P47 pilot, KIA over Holland, Sept., 1944.

Bud was one of Zemke's Wolfpack.

Nice!

I missed the show at Joint Base/McGuire a couple of weeks ago (I hear the T Birds did a nice show).
But nothing is as cool as round motors. We have an AgCat at our local airport....always a treat to hear it take off.

I miss seeing and hearing the Fuddy-Duddy B-17. the local air museum had to sell it several years back. I could pick the sound of that thing out in a heartbeat.
They usually get out one of the old warbirds to do a flyover during the parade on Memorial day.

UPDATE.....

The B24 I saw was giving rides and upon landing, had a landing gear collapse and skidded along on it's belly. Damaged but not totaled. No one injured. More when or if I hear.

Wow! now that's a realistic WWII ride right there! There seems to be a large amount of accidents involving WWII era planes lately.

Wonder if the pay-to-ride folk got a refund.... or free laundry service. :smirk:

"Pleas remain seated until the ride comes to a complete STOP"!!!!

They used to have a Warbirds event at the Spartanburg airport years ago. I was in the yard and heard the distinct sound of a radial engine, turned and looked up and saw a razor back P-47 turning onto final.

Rarely do we see any WW-II fighter aircraft around here. We do see the multi-engine craft about twice a year.

Lakeland's Fly-In is always the exception.
