Our local Chevy Dealer has a brand new bright red one sitting out in front of the dealership. Its a really offensive looking gas toilet, "flush it with your foot". You are absolutely right.......but you know that people are going to buy it, just because they can, and because it will confer greater "status" than a Hummer.

It’s an International! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pukeface.gif My company used them as a platform for their mobile X-Ray systems. Personally I think they are a Royal Pain in the rear to work on and the local service centers I’ve had to work with suck.

For my money – Volvo Trucks are far better than Internationals. It seems that my employer agrees because we have switched over to them for the platforms of our new systems.
 
I rather like it conceptually. I don't see myself having a need for something like it any time soon but I'd love to.

Bret's post points out why a vehicle of this type is neither a joke nor a mere ego toy for the under-endowed (although it could be both if used for such purposes). His company used them for hauling X-ray equipment. These are heavy objects. If you need to haul around heavy objects you need a heavy vehicle to do it.

Most of us would never even utilize the full capabilities of an F350 or Suburban to haul an LBC, family camper, fishing boat or trailer load of yard clippings. If you've got to move a bulldozer, a NASCAR team, an unlimited hydroplane or a herd of Clydesdales a consumer level truck doesn't cut it.

The comfy interior appointments are surprisingly practical too. When you've got a team moving your heavy gear long distances and they need to perform their job after many hours on the road you want to keep them comfortable along the way. The less fatigue they suffer on the trip the more efficient they'll be when they arrive.

Bret's post also points out that a real utility vehicle has multiple dimensions of utility. Reliability, maintainability and logistical support are critical issues when a truck is more of a tool than a toy.

seen one 2 weeks ago in lake mary,florida..just north of orlando..it was being used as a family/landscaping truck...boy those flowers in the back looked really heavy!!!
EGO TRIP...little guy 5'4" thought he was real big driving that to the cafe with his family...

He plants flowers for a living he needs some kind of ego boost. I have a cousin who is a nurse and needs an F250 which is used for commuting in San Jose. For now I'll stick with my little Triumph.
 
What boggles my mind is that you apparently don't need a CDL license to drive that thing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is in a way different category to your average oversized consumer level truck, isn't it?

In this case it shouldn't matter.

Commercial licenses are usually only required for vehicles with two or more rear axles. Ever rent one of those large 24 ft U-haul trucks? Next time you see one you’ll notice that they only have one rear axle. This is so anyone with a normal driver’s license can drive them.

Example: One of our major x-ray truck competitors, also uses the International trucks as a platform for their X-Ray trucks. But because their system is lighter than ours, they only require a single rear axle - while ours requires two axles. This means that customers of our x-ray trucks need to get a CDL in order to drive our trucks while our competitors don’t. That is a minor issue from our prespective as our systems have quite a few special features and capabilites that our competitor's x-ray trucks don’t have.

Disclaimer: Depending on the state you live in the laws might be a bit different than California so I'd check them out first. There might be a special requirement for a commercial license depending on the type of cargo you are hauling regardless of the number of rear axles or even the type of vehicle you drive. But I still feel that the number of axles is a good rule of thumb to go by.

Regardless in the case of the International 7300 CXT Truck being used by a private owner to tow a fifth wheel or something - I really don’t think a special license would be required.
 
Sometimes, I wish that Navistar wouldn't call their abomination of a company International. I mean the International Truck and engine Company holds little in common with the Internation Harvester Corporation from which it got its name. IHC was known for building the most robust, dependable heavy and light duty trucks on the road for over 50 years. When the company went bankrupt in the 70s it was sold off piece by piece. Cub cadet workers bought their plant, case bought out the farm divison, the diesel plant kept on suppling ford with diesels, etc. Now International has been brought back to life as a heavy duty truck company, and it builds crap. Yes that was a rant of sorts, I just ahte to see a grand old name go to waste on stupid projects like the one in this thread.
