Too eager by far

Finally got the clutch and gearbox into the car, sweet as a nut, also had the bright idea to do an oil change whilst the box was out, easy to get at the oil filter. Of course I could not check for leaks with the engine parked up on jacks awaiting the mating of the box. Forgot all about it after the seats went in, but remembered 3 miles up the road, with 4 pints of Millers finest classic oil leaving a trail from my garage to where the car stopped. OUCH.

I think/hope that the stopping is due to fuel starvation, the plugs look extremely white as apposed to nut brown - the car has been off the road for 2 months, the engine turns easily enough and it took 4 pints to top it back up, but I must stop the oil leak from the filter first before can explore the mystery of stopping.

Ouch is right Bob. But, with only 4 pints leaking out you may not have caused a lot of damage. I assume you haven't done a complete engine rebuild recently so the motor is already "broke in" .
 
Broken could have been the operative word, but all is well, tracked the fault down to the coil, changed it over and up she started. Still can't get the oil filter cannister to seal though. I am going to get the spin on adapter kit tonight, the weather is too good here at the moment to waste. Just need to adjust the mixture a tad too.

Some one up there must have been looking after me because another couple of miles would have killed the engine for sure.
 
When you installed the new filter into the canister did you insure that had removed the old sealing rubber ring from the canister head before installing the new one. I used a dental pick and discovered that an old rubber ring was left in the head. Removed it and viola! no more leaks.

My sentiments exactly. Every bit of the old gasket must be removed.
