This is a tactic used by some unethical bidders to reveal the reserve. They put in a huge bid ($110,000 in this case), the proxy bid system takes them to reserve, then they say "whoops" and cancel their bid. A dealer did this to me when I sold a Healey and when I checked his history he had done the same thing over and over.
I have never seen any problem with revealing the reserve...if the reserve is what I want for an item & somebody asks me, I tell them...if they want to pay my reserve, they'll make the bid...if they don't neither of us wastes our time.
Often I will tell the reserve if I have one. There are times, however, that I want to hold it back. The jerks that I refer to don't even bother to ask.
Another one surfaced here in the Northwest a few weeks ago too. A young kid posted some pictures of it on the MGexperience MGA forum and I responded & told him about the local club meeting. He subsequently turned up with his grand mother & she told us she put it in the barn for him when he was one year old. Now that he is old enough, he is allowed to start to get it going again. It looks pretty solid from the pictures he had.
Ted - I went over & read that thread...hope you guys up there shepherd him through the process of getting it running & assessing what he has....also hope somebody tunes him in to what he has & to its rarity!
Tony,
I'm hoping things will turn out good for him. He appears to have the interest and his grandmother decided long ago that the car was special and should be saved. We have a couple of guys in the local chapter of the club that restored their coupes from basket cases and I'm sure they will be interested to see this go well. He got to meet a few of the other A owners and I'm sure he will be back with questions. Things will probably take a bit longer due to the financial situation of a teenager though. The next chapter meeting is next Tuesday so lets see if his interest has been sparked.
