Tonight's questions bearings & straps

Well, I am almost to the point where everything is clean and repainted - /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif - and ready to be put back, now I just need a body to put it on. The body guy is now backed up till September meaning likely next spring for the first drive. But that's OK better slow progress than no progress. Anyway, doing some small jobs like brakes and bearings. Here are tonight's questions:

1. I was looking at the rear bearing VB sent and they included part VB #5-854 - rear hub oil seal. I don't recall taking one off. what gives? Do I need it? (interestingly they seem not to have sent the o-ring and seal but that may be my fault)

2. What is the rebound strap made of rubber or leather? Not sure what to use to clean it

Yes, you need the hub seal, as well as the paper gasket and the "O" ring for the outer flange.

The rebound straps are made of fabric reinforced rubber, or at least the original ones were. Lacquer thinner seems to work well for cleaning them.

The kits I bought from VB, part No. 5-922 included the bearing, seal, o-ring and hub gasket for $19.95 each. I think you need them all.

The new rebound straps are all rubber, the old ones had a fabric in them.
