This is the official POW/MIA Recognition Day, ceremony held at the local Veterans Park.

Air Force ROTC Honor Guard

This is Van Grubb, his dad was an Air Force pilot shot down late in the war and died in captivity. He was the keynote speaker and related the story of the family's ordeal as time went on. Dad was Wilmer "Newk" Grubb.

It's good to see, what looks like, an actual buggler playing.

Yes, he was actually playing Taps. I've seen/heard some of the fake electronic bugles and believe it to be a bit disrespectful. Sadly, these fellows are missing four more of their "regular" riflemen due to other commitments.

The organizers gave short notice for this event on learning NO other ceremonies were planned for any venue in the whole county. Hard to understand that, personally.

While his grip is a bit unorthodox, his embouchure looks good, so I figured he must be playing.

The last funeral I attended at Ft. Sill's national cemetery utilized one of those electronic bugles. I found it sad.

I've had to take a week "off" to deal with some physical issues, but meant to also include a note regarding one of my co-workers and pal while in the Air Force. I had him in my mind as I shot the photos on last Friday. Jimmy Alley was a fellow Air Force Photojournalist, stationed at Ubon a year ahead of me. A couple months before he was due for discharge he got bored at 601st and got TDY'd to DaNamg, where he volunteered to go on a Jolly Green SAR mission, a couple weeks before his discharge. One of the things that galls me most is he's listed on that "Jolly 67" manifest as "passeneger." That is demeaning to him and all the rest of us who hung our a$$es out to get images of events for DoD. He was aboard that flight to do his job as a combat photographer. Parts of him finally came home in 2010.

I played oboe. Yuck!
IMO, the hardest reed instrument to deal with! It was B-flat clarinet for me. My Aunt Grace played oboe, I couldn't get anything but squeaks out of it!

I play the clarinet. I was a woodwind repairman throughout high school and I can play all the woodwinds, but haven't played anything but the clarinet in years.

I somewhat envy that. My primary interest was always with photography. And a cold realization around age fifteen I'd not ever be another Acker Bilk... πŸ˜‰

As my Old Fella often joked, my best musical instrument was the phonograph.

The clarinet is the only one I play well. The others I can only play well enough to determine if they are in proper working condition.
