About 6:30 I went up to the local coffee shop and visited with my Model A club members, yea I know but they are nice guys and are always doing things and welcomed me with open arms.

Anyway I noted that Miss Agatha jumped a bit when hitting a bump and that the front tires are starting to feather a bit. Woops, time for the toe in/out to be adjusted with a machine. Guess it is one of those things I just put off and should not have.

Every outing is an experience and a reason to find something that is not to my likeing. But then with these longer road trips as I get more confidence in her and that is all good.

Jack,

Just sounds like you're working throught the "teething troubles" after a full resto, takes awhile!

The alignment of my Sprite was way off when I got it, too, but oddly, it seemed to track really nicely. In my experience, bad alignment results in vague steering; this was quite the opposite.

I took it to the local alignment place, and it turned out that the Sprite would technically fit on their racks, but it was so close to the limit that they were afraid to try to drive it up onto the rack. Might put a wheel off and damage something, they said. But instead, they did the alignment with a tape measure (!) and didn't charge me anything. They got it quite close, too; feels good, and no obvious tire wear after 1500 miles, anyway.

30W oil Hap for the present.

Have 12 lbs at idle and 23 at speed all at 180 degrees engine temp.

Too darn hot here and humid for me to work in garage pulling engine and such. It is just going to have to wait till fall.

About 15 min or so is about all I can stand outside working.

Jack,

Change that oil out to 20W50 and see what happens. That should take you all of 15 minutes to get the front end up and the oil plug pulled. Come back the next day and finish up. I'll be curious to see the results after getting correct oil weight in there.

Jack - Jack - Jack....never anything in an MG or AH engine except Castrol 20W50!! & a good oil filter

I wouldn't use 20 weight if the oil pressure is running that low with 30 weight, but that is just me.
Jack- is that a typo "12 idle and 23 at speed"? That just doesn't compute.
Bill

That is not a typo 12 at idle and 23 at speed will go up a bit more at 4K.

I had 20-50 in it and it was worse. And for the next trick a can of stp, hehe.

Cold I have 60 lbs and more no problem. It is a fact that oil thins out as it gets warm. The first number is the viscosity and the second is the shear number. IE 30 is thicker than 20 and in this engine for the time being 50 W would be outstanding. The pump is just worn out, period.

But if you have 12 at idle I would expect for you to have a minimum of 40 at running speed. I now suspect that your pressure relief valve (the ball bearing) is still bypassing too much. I would be tempted to pop out the valve seat and check just how horrible it looks (a piece of strong steel wire .090 to .100 dia, bent almost double could be used as a removal tool)

I have 70 lbs upon initial start up now that I replaced the cup with a Ball bearing and a bit stiffer spring.

Wooh, did not know that seat came out. Shop manual says that the Valve cup is to be ground into its seating in place Page A 7.

The seat is just (lightly) press-fit in place. Doesn't take much power to pop it out and reface it on a lathe and keep the junk out of the engine. Normally I just tap a 5/16-24 thread into it and pull it but with the engine in the car I would avoid the metal shavings.
