To change carbs or not to, that is the question...

I have a question to the group... I have a strong 1275 engine with the side-draft weber carbs (sort of racing style). They burn gas quick and I have had to clean them out, and double fuel filter them. They still give me a bit of trouble when trying to start the car. I am looking for dependability and I am considering going back to the SU style or a down-draft style weber in the near future. As far as maintaining easy start and dependability, what is the groups suggestions? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Stoney, for simplicity, I prefer the dual SU's. If you understand them, and have a set with tight throttle shafts, they're pretty much a "set 'em once and forget it" operation.
Unless you've got a radically built 1275 I would think that dual Weber's are massive overkill. I've run a single DCOE 45 on a fairly hot 1275 without problems in the past. In my experience DCOE's are very fuel pressure sensitive. I used to run about 1.5 ~ 2 PSI with mine.
What are you running? Twin 40's? How about choke tube sizes?
Anyway, for the street, chalk up a vote for the SU's. HS2's for a stock, or mild engine, and HS4's for something with a little more beef to it.

I had every intention of changing from my H2 and going with DGV purely from an ease of tuning standpoint (DCOE too hot for my engine!) but after a month or two, and tuned properly, they start the car everytime, are relatively good with the gas, and when pushed sound great. I now don't want or need weber and will firmly stick to my H2s, I'd recommend that.
 
Jeff, actually I am running twin 40s (good shot). It does seem to run a bit hot, but from what I gather from the previous owner, he had the engine a bit "race-built" Which is fun... but dependability for street use to me comes first.
