I have had the car for 29 years so who knows how old the tires really are, the correct Michelin XWXs, used only for puttering around the PCH here in S. CA, plenty of soft tread, a few cracks can be seen here and there in upper part of sidewall. Anyway, considering new tires, from various sites it seems 195 70 15s or going up to 205 work fine with no rub, found on Discount Tire Kumho 195s for about $80/tire. Coker has a Vredestein 185 70 15 for $ 160, but not sure what advantage would be. Any other suggestions?
 
There are several posts here on the forum involving tire selection.
However, considering both economics and you limited driving profile I would choose a lower priced tire than the Vredestein.
 
Vredestein's are softer, the local guys tell me. Corner like crazy, but wear rapidly.
When I went looking for my MK2, I did the requisite research, based upon original sizing:

Pre-1964 6.40X15

1965-1972 735-15

80-series
metric 185-15

Alpha-numeric
78 series E78-15

P-metric 75
series radial P195/75R15

P-metric 70
series radial P205/70R15



Optional Radials in 1960's: 185HR15 (factory)
As installed: 165R15 86T
 
Dunlop Sports available thru Coker Tire.
 
I wouldn't back the car out of the garage to wash it on 29-year-old tires. Hopefully these will soon be replaced.

If this is a Series 1 or 2 E-Type then my opinion is that the Vreds in 185/15 look right and handle authentically. They do not seem to me to be soft or wear rapidly (as opposed to Dunlops I have had which do exhibit those traits).
