TR4/4A Tires for 5" stock Rims [TR4]

Based on all the threads I've seen on Tires I seem to have narrowed it down to 3 sizes (not going for the Redlines). These would be 165/80/15 (stated as closest to original 165R15). Kumho ($33 ea.) says spec Rim width 4"-5.5". Then I also see people using 185/65/15 (spec is 5"-6.5") and also 195/65/15 (spec is 5.5"-7"). Can some of the folks out there with stock 5" rims let me know what you are using and whether you are glad that you got what you got.. thanks

I have always used 165R15... Michelins, Dunlops, Coopers and probably Kumhos this time around. I drive it hard on twisty mountain roads but do not Autocross.

Stock rim width (steel or wire wheels) for the TR4 is 4 1/2". I use 165R15 with wires on my 65 TR4A. Fat tires on a 4 or 4A trys to make a statement that the car can't diliver.

I ran Michelin 185/65 on stock TR3 rims for awhile, and felt they were a definite improvement over the skinny tires. But the big advantage, IMO, is not the extra width but that more performance-oriented tires are available in that size.

Seemed like the car wanted more; so I eventually wound up with 5.5" TR6 rims and 205/55 Bridgestone Potenzas. Took 2nd in class the only time I raced it, in the VTR autox.
But by then I also had sway bars & uprated bushings, so perhaps they wouldn't be as much help with a stock suspension.
