Tire tread depth

Hopefully, everyone is already aware of this. But, JIC someone didn't get the message, here is some interesting information about minimum tire tread depth.

Basically what it says is that wet stopping distance goes up dramatically BEFORE the tire is legally worn out (wear bars showing).

Given the number of accidents I see every time we get a little sprinkle of rain, most people don't know this.

What Honest Abe doesn't tell you about tire tread depth

Years ago I did a 360 degree turn on I-5 near Orlando in a rental car with bad tires. I was coming back from Tampa and get iin a mid-day rain shower and I hydroplaned on a puddle.

The rental car outfit didn't seem to care since another guy got right into the car as I returned it.

I'm sure I buy new tires sooner than I should but the summer storms here in Florida are scarry. I don't drive the TR in the rain but the combination of fat tires and light weight on the other cars make the rain intresting to say the least.
Another thing is that I replace tires every 5 years no matter how much tread is left.

Hello Randall,

"Given the number of accidents I see every time we get a little sprinkle of rain, most people don't know this."

If American drivers are like U.K. drivers, the plain fact is that the gap between travelling cars is far too small, and leaves no room to manoeuver. Certainly the point is valid but that drivers do not help themselves is also a big reason for so may rear end bumps, that, and not looking far enough ahead.

"Not looking far enough" ... the fellow that totalled my TR3A admitted to the police that he didn't have his eyes on the road at all ! Said he was looking down to get a Coke ...
