If you own a car,ANY car,you should know how to tell the age of the tires on it.Here is an easy and important lesson for you, please share this with your friends and fellow club members.Find the DOT marking on the tire,it may begin with letters followed by numbers,or just a series of numbers. You are interested in the final 3 or 4 numbers only. For example, if the last 3 numbers are 3-4-9,this tire was made the 34th week of either 1999 or 1989.{possibly 1979}If you have a DOT code where the NEXT TO LAST digit is 0{this is the 4 digit part}for example 3-4-0-2, the tire was made the 34th week of 2002.Different makers claim different "safe" ages,Michelin says 8 years, other makers say 10 years.Storage can affect the actual physical state of rubber, sunlight and weather can cause cracks in the tread and sidewalls, chemicals{including brake fluid} and detergents can affect color and condition.Even if tires are kept indoors under "ideal" conditions, age will affect and ultimately destroy tires. Please check your tires and replace them if you feel they may be dangerous, your life and loved ones are too important not to be sure...SAFETY FIRST!!!!
