Just a little bit ago I saw this tiny guy by my car. Taking Doc's advice from yesterday I set the camera up to ISO-800, f/13, 1/250, using my 18~140mm lens. When I changed the ISO to 800, f/11 was not an option, it went from f/9 to f/13. I settled on f/13. In the first photo you can appreciate just how tiny it is when you observe the ant, directly to the left of its eye.

Sweet, Walt. That withstands a serious cropping very well:

Another thing to keep in mind is, the closer you are to the subject, the less the depth of field.

I was really close to this little guy, I was zoomed I all the way and the end of the lens was probably ten inches from him.

And for the same distance/aperture, a longer lens will also have a shallower DOF.

I nearly stepped on him, I thought he was a pebble when I was walking to my car.
