timing sprockets

Ok, starting to put my new engine together and found that the new cam sprocket and crank sprocket, both from Moss but made in India, won't line up the timing marks per the Hynes manual. Anyone else had this problem?

Hello WDP.

I can't comment on these parts (and I don't know which engine you are working on), but it is easy to get confused with timing the cam due to the cam rotating at half crank rotation.

Set your crank at TDC on one and four (or six) and set the cam with the lobes of four (or six) at a Vee configuration. something like exhaust at ten to and the inlet at ten past.
Put the sprockets in the chain and see if the marks line up. Obviously you need to eyeball them to line with the keyways and often you need to make a one tooth adjustment. It should all go together that way?

I'm working on a B motor and no matter how many times we tried the only way we could get it timed correctly with #1 tdc, cam and crank key ways clocked correctly is with the cam sprocket timing mark 180 out. I was questioning the quality of the County brand, made in India parts.
Both the Bentley and Haynes manuals show the timing marks side by side.

Would I be out of line to say the key ways have no bearing.

TDC on crank #1 all the way up.

Dot on crank gear should point to the cam.

Make the cam dot point to the crank dot with the chain on.

Make darn sure the are in line with the center line of the crank and cam.

All should be good, forget the keyways.

Hello WDP,

yes, the marks should be inside but if the crank and cam are aligned correctly, forget the marks.
If you have the original wheels, check the marks relative to the keyways and compare to the new items. If old and new do match you are doing something wrong, otherwise re-mark your new sprockets, if you like.
