Timing Question

I have a 79B with
Weber DCV
original Dizzy
Ported vacuum for the Dizzy, not connected

I have set the timing at 20 BTD and have don't have any problems, but I feel I'm not getting the full HP out of the engine. I tuned it to 10 degrees BTDC and hooked up the advance. It would backfire, rarely, maybe once on a 5 min trip, otherwise ran good.

Should I leave the timing where it is and hook up the vacuum advance?
Is it a matter of "if it works, don't fix it" ?
