Timing marks

Does the BN 1 and 2 have a single or multiple marks for setting timing ? ( I would check my car but its 3000 miles away)I understand that some models can set timing off a single mark. Any suggestions for brand, model and features to look for in purchasing a timing light? thanks jtb

Hi John,
Some BN1's don't have a timing mark. Late BN1's & BN2's have a small dimple on the inside edge of the rear pulley flange that lines up with an embossed arrow on the timing cover. This dimple indicates tdc only.

When I had the radiator out of my BN2, I permanently marked the pulley in additional steps of 5 degrees & attached a small wire pointer to take the place of the rather vague embossed timing cover mark.

If your engine has no timing marks, you will need to accurately find tdc & mark the pulley & add some kind of pointer reference mark.

A timing light with a variable dial advance feature will allow you to set any desired advance & still have the tdc marks aligned. I have no preference on brand. IF you still have positive ground, be sure to hook up the TL battery leads correctly & the timing light should have an insulated case to prevent the light case from shorting to ground if you lay it against any metal. Negative ground is no problem.

Watch Ebay. I got a brand new Sears Craftsman variable advance for 25 bucks last year. You will need a good quality one because it needs to be bright. Also try painting the pointer and notch with white paint. It really helps when the strobe flashes.

TH ,those are good suggestions, however, I have discovered that painting a broad white stripe centered over the timing mark on the damper then painting the actual mark black is better. The dirtier the actual mark gets the better you can see it.--FWIW---Keoke----PS Got Snow! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

Got almost 6 feet in last 48 hours. More on the way. Roads are barely passable in 4 wheel. Nice thing about snow is you push it and it stays. Heard you guys got alot of rain. All I can say about that is your cars are cleaner than ours. I lived in Woodland hills for 23 years. Never rained until it does in buckets. But you'll be driving your Healey way before me.
