Hi John,
Some BN1's don't have a timing mark. Late BN1's & BN2's have a small dimple on the inside edge of the rear pulley flange that lines up with an embossed arrow on the timing cover. This dimple indicates tdc only.
When I had the radiator out of my BN2, I permanently marked the pulley in additional steps of 5 degrees & attached a small wire pointer to take the place of the rather vague embossed timing cover mark.
If your engine has no timing marks, you will need to accurately find tdc & mark the pulley & add some kind of pointer reference mark.
A timing light with a variable dial advance feature will allow you to set any desired advance & still have the tdc marks aligned. I have no preference on brand. IF you still have positive ground, be sure to hook up the TL battery leads correctly & the timing light should have an insulated case to prevent the light case from shorting to ground if you lay it against any metal. Negative ground is no problem.
