Ok the car is running alright after the carb experiment last week. I have timed it by ear (not great idea I know) I tried the static timing thing, but with nobody here to help, (I tried the local MG board) I am not getting it. I cannot see the mark on the pulley for dynamic timing. Can somebody take a picture of their timing notch, (I am a visual sort of guy) so I can get an idea of what I am looking at. I have a decent light, and will need like three minutes once I get the darn notch located. Then I will dila in these carbs and get rid of that last little low rev hesitation and back burble **** when down shifting and coasting. Thanks guys
 
Notch is on front edge of pully near the belt V, in fact on the lip of the belt V. You should be able to feel it running you finger around the outer edge.
 
would I see it better from in front of the car looking staright at the pulley or from over by the right (drivers) tire looking in towards the pulley V ?
 
Prob from the front and almost under the car, hehe.
 
i havent done mine proper yet either, but i think u gotta get under the front of the car from what i hear...zimmmy
 
Hap had a great idea about makeing a new timeing pointer with a stiff peice of wire mounted on a bolt on the timeing chain cover including a new notch in the belt pully. Think that is what I will do. Seems so smart.
 
yeah Jack that is a great idea once I find the original one.... or get somebody to drive to Ottawa and help me do static timing. Hey the leaves are about to start changing colours, and Canadian Beer is really good. I also need help hanging drywall in the basement.....
 
Take a putty knife and run it around the front outer edge of the pully the bottom pully of course.
 
It's quite a small little notch. I'll try and get a picture if I can when I get home. Somewhere in heaven, a British engineer is laughing each time we crawl under the front of our little cars to find that mark... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
I don't think that timeing mark was designed for Spridgets.
 
JAck , what do you mean it was not designed for spridgets?. MY 70 midget has the marker on the block to adjust the timing so there "should be" a corresponding notch.
 
I think he means that the A-Series engine was not designed for the Spridget, it came from the Morris Minor (I think) and was also used in the Mini.
 
The designer put the pointer in the wrong place for you to see easly in the Spridgets, it should have been up on the side with a different notch in the pully.

However, that said at least all the A 40 pullys and timeing chain covers will work on any of the engines.
 
I have found that it makes it easier to time the engine if you slightly bend out the pointer you are going to time the car too so you can differentiate it from the other pointers, and use a paint marker to paint the notch on the pulley after you find it. A wire bristled brush will help you find the notch. If I recall correctly there is also a dimple on the pulley, do not confuse this for the notch and try to time to it (tried that one time). This was all on a 1275. And you will usually need 2 people as you have to get under the car to use the timing light. Also i think you need to have the vaccuum advance disconnected if somebody can confirm this.

spent 30 minutes under the car, in fourth gear pushing it slowly to turn the pulley, cleaned it with carb cleaner, rubbed it with a cloth, cant fing the darn notch. Unless I go to Dixville notch in NH. At least I still got a sense of humour..... somebody send me a picture......

Woodie, on the 1275 it's on the edge of the pulley closest to the timing cover. It can be nearly impossible to see with the belt installed unless you are virtually underneath the thing. When you find it, draw a line across the thick part of the damper with a paint marker, in line with the notch.

Closest to the timeing cover, now wonder who's bright idea that was.
