timing light issue?

I put my timing light on a friends MGB and then he took it to a smog place. The mechanic at the smog place said it was 9 degrees off on the timing. My timing light is a Craftsman adjustable. I don't see how I would have got it that far off, so since this thing is electronic for the adjustable, have you ever seen one that stops adjusting? the 9 degrees happens to correspond to the 10 degrees that I was adjusting.
Any ideas?

Are you sure the smog place used the same reference that you did? Maybe your book says 4 BTDC and theirs says 4 ADTC or something like that? I don't know much about MGB motors, but I know that on the later Triumph TR6, the books all say to disconnect the vacuum advance without mentioning that the vacuum retard has to be left connected (and that there is no vacuum advance on most models).

I don't know, I will ask more questions tonight at our meeting. I think I may borrow his car and take it to the smog place myself to make sure it passes.
