Timing Cover Gasket Replacement

I thought I was being so careful. But I got the cover off kilter a bit while fitting it, and then couldn't realign the gasket once it was full of gasket goop. I ended up tearing the whole thing off and starting over. I really made a mess. I had to wash all the sealant off with lacquer thinner.

Is there an easy trick to this. Like four hands?
 
I opted to go without the gasket goop. It took extra time to clean the surfaces so no residue was remaining from the old gasket. I am quite pleased to report that I don't have any leaks, at least not around the timing cover.
 
If you use a sealer, such as Red Shellac, do only one side and allow it to dry to the cover for a day or so. Then it won't move when you try to position it.
 
I know this has been asked time and again, but would Blue RTV and any decent silicone sealer be good for that cover?

I also have a bottle of Permatex "High Tack" and that's what I used on the timing cover I messed up. Maybe I should use that again but apply it to the cover and gasket only, and dry it for a day?

That worked well on my chrome cover.
