Timing an A-Series......

......Shouldn't be this difficult, or do I have other issues?

I've done this twice in the last two months.
Static at 5*
Dynamic at 17* (where is best)
Still can't get over 4500 rpm....gets sluggish at 4k. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

I've taken the dynamic up to 25* and brought it down as far as 11*

Stock dizzy, new rotor, condensor, points; stock coil, champion plugs, wires are good. New valves & springs etc.
Compression is good all 4, oil press good.

I have a feeling that this maybe exhaust related, but don't know enough to be sure, hoped you guys may have some knowledge in that realm.

Unless you have some sort of heavily restricted silencer on it, sounds to me as if you're running outta fuel at top-end.

Now you mention it, the exhaust has been messed with except I cleaned and boiled the header out, put a new flange on the header/downpipe join.
Running out of fuel......my plug colour has been good, think a couple flats downward would sort it?

I second the running out of fuel suggestion. It should be able to get through 4k without problems. You'd need a big exhaust restriction to hold it back.

I set the total advance (w/o vacuum) at about 32 degrees at 4k RPM. After that I listen for pinging when driving under load and retard the timing in 2 degree steps as necessary until the pinging goes away. I have switched to the Hitachi dizzy so I don't know where that puts my static timing (you can't static time it). I have yet to check my idle advance.
