Finally had a day to spend with the B. Thought cleaning the engine bay would be a good first step. Got out my pressure washer and Simple Green, and started to go to work. Well..... After spending an hour and managing to clean an area of about 1.5 square inches, I decided I needed to bring in the big guns, or spend the entire holiday season entrenched in the task at hand.
Called a local rental place, and got a high-pressure steam cleaner. It was essentially a pressure washer with a kerosene heater that rocketed the water temp up to about 2 million degrees. (It also had a wheel base equal to that of the B!)
Well, within about 2 hours, I learned a myriad of things about my engine. I had no idea that things in there were different colors! Why, the transmission housing, it turns out, is a nice clean alluminum color. A dark red on the lower half of the engine block. Even the valve cover, it turns out, is not black. And a yellow fan?! I never would have guessed it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
I had planned on spending the following day wire-brushing the undercarriage and painting the needy parts with Rust Encapsulator, but we got a storm that would have made Noah himself nervous, so I pulled out the distributor and rebuilt that instead. And cleaned up the steering wheel.
I won't get a chance to work on her again until after Christmas, but at least I've taken another small step on the road to my LBC's recovery. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif
