Tie rod ends

Well I managed to get everything apart on the front end so I could change the bushes. Here is a picture of the tie rod end. It is very flimsy and it appears to have a small crack in the rubber. I'm not sure whether these rubbers are supposed to be greased filled. Can you advise me whether or not to replace tie rod ends?

If they're tight, just replace the rubber boots & truck on!

"Tight is right!"

It should take some effort to move the "stubs" by hand. If they "flop about" they're shot, otherwise get new boots and press on.

Thanks guys. No they are not tight in fact really floppy. Looks like I will have to add them to the shopping list.

Oh, tie rods easy, you can get replacements from your local parts store and it should not take an hour to change em out. Just mark the threads so you know about where to start with the adjustments on the new ones.

Not all tie rod ends are equal. My "method" involves pointed dividers: put one end on the tie rod center (be as exact as possible here) and scribe a line on the rod with the other end... about at 8". this way if the rod ends are different you still have a reference mark to the center of the thing. I use a scale to set the 8" dividers not a ruler, BTW.

Most times I do this before I disassemble and use the center of the tie-rod stud on the underside of the steering arm.

Now that's a good trick Doc, thanks.
