Tie rod ends or boots

Ok I'm ready to order all the parts for the front end. Should I buy tie rod ends or just the boots? I already have the tie rod and lower control arm, still attached, removed from the kingpin/swivel assembly. What's the easiest way to remove the tie rod from the lower control arm without disconnecting the steering mechanism? I don't want to screw up the alignment any more than I have to.
