This is Canadian National locomotive number 2699. It is a 212 ton, 6 axle machine powered by a 4400 hp V16 4 stroke Diesel.
The engine & train were passing the town of Independence, Louisiana when she threw a piston.

Holy-Moly!

My Dad used to work for CN (in the fifties with the first diesel-electric locos). I'll show this to him.

He remembers one that snapped a valve head off in Ottowa. They drove it like that back to Toronto for repairs. When they pulled the head, there was a massive piece of steel inside (the valve head) that had been pounded into a rough sphere.

Locomotive doubling as a Trident missile platform?

First thoughts of the home owner could have been: Asteroid strike? Blue ice?

LAST on the list would be diesel locomotive jetsam. sheesh.

A pal sent me that info last eve. Astounding.

"Hello, Your Homeowners Insurance Co, may I help you?"
"Yes, a diesel locomotive tossed a piston through the roof of my house and it landed in my dining room. I need to file a claim."
