Throttle stuck wide open

It was a beautiful summer night a perfect evening to take the Healey out for a spin. The car was running great and I just received a "nice car" comment from a teenager using the crosswalk. I gave him a nod and hammered the throttle so he could hear the wonderful exhaust note that would come out the big 2" tailpipes. Then..................... my throttle stuck wide open!!!!!!! I quickly lifted the foot pedal and nothing. I had no choice but to kill the ignition before I blew my newly rebuilt engine. One tow truck later I'm looking at it in my garage. Seems like everything's fine with the exception of my rear choke cable that has slack? Choke knob doesn't want to pull out as well and I'm afraid to start it for fear of the throttle getting stuck wide open again. Advice please!

HI Disconnect the chokes at the carbs and make sure the throttle barrels close as evidenced by the throttle stop resting on its perch on the intake manifold. also make certain that the throttle linkages are set correctly. Do you have choke return springs installed??---Keoke

I don't think a stuck choke cable would do that. You should check to make sure all of your throttle linkages and angles are properly done (look at the service manual). If the throttle lever angles are off, it can go too far and get stuck open. When I first got my BJ8 in 1985 it would do this, until I followed the shop manual and adjusted it all properly.

-- healynut, i agree if the linkage isnt set up correctly it will achieve an "over center locking" effect at full throttle, i actually wrote a story on this forum a couple of years ago as it happened to a friend as we sat in his bj8. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Thanks to all!

Keoke: I do have choke return springs installed.
healynut: I'll do as suggested and check throttle linkage angles. My workshop manual shows nothing on throttle linkage and or angles. Which service manual are you referring to?
