Throttle Linkage

I am not too happy with the way my throttle linkage acts. I don't think it has quite enough throw and it intermittently sticks. The pedal return spring occasionally pops off. I cannot allow this when I take this out for it's first test drive.

I reassembled my linkage on my twin carb 1960 BT7 the best I could from all sources I could find.

What I cannot find is the lengths of the individual shafts so I literally played musical lengths (my car came unassambled with many extra linkage rods).

Is there a reference on the lengths somewhere on line? I have followed the convoluted guide in the shop manual but am still not too satisfied.

Also do these ball joints need replacing as a matter of hand during restoration?

TIA Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Hi Tracy,

Sounds like this would be easier to solve if you looked at another BT7 or similar twin carb Healey and took some measurements and checked out their linkage setup. Do you belong to any Healey clubs, local or national? You could look at the membership books and find someone in your area and give them a call.

When I bought my BJ7 the thottle response was terrible and lubrication, adjusting and replacing the plastic right angle part that holds the main shaft made a world of difference. Never any problems with the balljoints popping off. Yours do have the little clips to hold them in position, yes?

I do have the spring clips albiet a few quite old. I replaced one because it was missing and seem to be getting closer. I was just hoping someone might have this tribal knowledge on linkage lengths.

bighly,

I can measure the two adjustable links that I have this weekend and let you know. Mine works just fine, but I don't know if it's "correct". I don't have ao overdrive throttle switch, so I don't have that adjustable link.

I found that the ball joints need to be adjusted so that there is no slop but that they don't bind either.

If you come to the Palo Alto meet on September 8, you'll see lots of Healeys, which may be your best bet.
