Three Bears Plug Question

Which spark plug would be best for a relatively high performance engine - one that is too hot, one that is too cold or one that is just right in the middle. Examples: NGKBP5ES = hot, NGKBP6ES = middle, NGKBP7ES = cold, or , Champion CHN9YC = cold, CHN12YC = hot.

By performance I mean increased compression, moderate cam and Sport coil with standard points (slightly opened gap).

Bill

Bill, I would start by trying the colder plug first.
And, I have had excellent performance from the NGK's over the years. They are the only plugs I run in all my vehicles.
Jeff

I'm running the NGKBP7ES plugs in my TR6. Started with the 6's but they kept fouling. The NGK's also seem easier to pick up at the local parts store than the Champions.

Only time I would run a hot plug would be in a oil burning beater.
Cold plugs are required when running power adders, ie nitrous or turbo.
The heat range of a plug really is only how fast the plug dissipates heat at the tip of the plug.

Well TR6 Bill, IMOP it would depend on how you plan on driving the car. For example, if you plan to only drive long distances at speed a cooler plug would be recommended. On the otherhand, if the driving is to be less aggresive and over shorter distances a hotter plug is suggested.---Fwiw---Keoke

Cheese and crackers, there is a compromise for every thing. With variable valve timing and all the newer innovations it would seem that BOSCH, NKG or whoever would be making a plug that would be variable with the temp requirements.

Vette, The Bosch Platinum plugs IMOP have the widest heat range per model of all the plugs. While not variable in the sense you mentioned once an engine is set up correctly on a plug type you rarely are required to change plugs to meet driving requirements.---Keoke
