Thoughts on Volvo wagon?

Looking at a '93 Volvo 240 (245) wagon.
Automatic,205,580 miles,very clean condition.They've
been offered $2500 for it.
Since our kid can break a rock, reliability is
really important,& I know that some years of Volvos are
better than others.
Ideas?

205,580 miles reliable? Brother-in-law drove his to Fla and back from St. Louis and killed a tappet. Tools to redo tappet more than car was worth.

Doug $2500 will buy a lot of Civic or Corolla or even Kia or Hyundai made this decade. There are times when cheap and reliable and COMPLETELY uninteresting are the way to go. No drama, no fuss, just starts in the morning, easy to insure and cheap on gas. 205K miles, while impressive also means 205K brakes, rubber, cooling system etc etc. - asking for trouble IMHO

Agree with the above. I don't care what kind of reputation a car has, 205K is 205K.

A year and a half ago, my daughter bought a 1997 V90 for $1300. 104,000 miles. The car has no rust. Needed brake hoses and tires. It had the timing belt replaced at 79,000. Only had two minor problems. 1, the belt tensioner froze and 2, there was an oil leak from the cam housing(?).

This is a very well taken care of car, otherwise I wouldn't even consider it.
Our Daughter bought an S60,against my advice,& it turned out to be the biggest pile of
junk to come down the road.
