I got one of those front suspension rebuild kids a few years back and finally getting to it the last few days.

I went to reassemble the kingpin today, and put the two supplied cork washers in place, and they promptly just crumbled to bits. Any suggestions about replacements? I have some spare cork so could cut a few more. I did see a reference to using rubber?

I never bother with cork. I cut new ones from 1/8" sheet rubber using hole saws and a drill press. Inner and outer are two different ID sizes, so you'll need at least 3 holes saws. I can dig up the sizes if you decide to do it that way. Some people use a rubber hose washer, but it's not correct ID for both.
 
Peter C at worldwide has a stock of washers that he supplies with his front end kits. I'm sure he'd sell you a few and mail them for a reasonable cost.
 
No need to cut, just go to ACE Hardware and pick up Cap Thread Gasket part # 4082178. Clean the ends of control arms very well because the seal will have a tendency to move on you while you slip king pin in place. To keep the seal from moving I applied a few drops of super glue to one side of seal to stick and hold seal to inside edge of control arm. Lightly lube the other side for the King Pin to slip into position and to rotate on.

 
Blue Max, I tried 4-5 Ace Hardware in my area and all the had were the cork washers. Fortunately I was able to source some from another state. When Installing the cork washers the trick is to soak in water for 24 hours before trying to install.

I picked up a sheet of 1/8" neoprene and will try cutting some out from it.

One more question. I see that they are different sizes (inner home), but I can't see any difference on the wishbone - so it's not clear which side has the larger ID and which the smaller?

Small end is the far end (away from slot). If you look at the threads on the fulcrum pin, it'll be clear.
