You might be surprized.
I re-patriated my Healey in 2001 and qualified then for an exemption (reducing the import duty tax to a mere 5% and eliminating VAT entirely) but it seems that the exchange rate situation made that too attractive and HM Customs & Excisemen lost revenue.
Someone that tried to do exactly the same thing about a year ago found that they were allowed a BTI (Binding Tariff Information) from HMC&E- so they would end up paying nearly 30% (10% import duty + the 17.5% VAT on both the car price AND the DUTY!- enough to spark a revolution...) on the cost of the car.
Ouch. The buyer would end up paying more for transportation and tax than for the car. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
