So, I've been thinking of ways I can desulphate batteries when I had an idea. "I can use muratic acid to dissolve the sulfur crystals!"

I haven't had time to try it yet and really didn't want to waste money on a test that probably wouldn't work.

Last night I was thinking about the project when it hit me, "Muratic acid is hydrocloric acid. Put that in a battery with sulfur crystals, disolve crystals, put off a gas......possibly hydrogen sulfide...then die. :eeek:

I can see it now, I'm dead laying in the yard, Kelly comes over to check on me and falls out, then here comes the dog.... :wall:

I then realized it would be two weeks before anyone started looking for us. :frown:

I think I'll just stick to things you can beat with a hammer. :hammer:

I've always hated chemistry, now I know why.

I just got a "desulfator kit" in the mail this week, and got it all together. Now maybe if it isn't raining and cold tomorrow I will yank the battery out of the Herald and see it this thing actually works (both my assembly and the concept in general) at least it will be safer than dumping muratic acid into the battery!

I think you would end up making hydrochloric acid gas.

I just read a bit about desulfating batteries. It seems like it's one of those "don't try this at home" things. I would just put the money for a desulfating kit into a new battery.

70herald, I see your in Jerusalem so maybe finding a battery is difficult or extremely expensive and necessitates your trying to desulfate the battery. Let us know how it goes since you already have the kit, and good luck!

Batteries are quite readily available, and no I don't own a camel :jester: most thing here are however rather expensive mostly because of high taxes. The battery I put in my Toyota (55 amp hour, nothing big or unusual cost ~$90 for a "cheapy", My thought was that the desulfator was cheap enough that if it in fact works, it will save money, particularly for the huge battery in my diesel minivan. If it doesn't work then I am not out enough to be worried. I will try it and let you all know what happens.
