Ford has said that it will take up the option to buy the Rover brand name, which had been retained by BMW.
BMW had been in talks with several parties in recent months about selling the name after MG Rover collapsed last year.

Ford had retained the first option to buy the Rover trademark after a deal which saw it acquire Land Rover in 2000.

As a post-script, it has transpired that Ford paid $10 million for the Rover name, to prevent the new Chinese owners of ex-Rover from producing an SUV and badging it a Rover, thus devaluing their own Land Rover brand.
