But when it comes to fan belts does it matter which side the cogs are on when it comes to the MGB. Belt shape is identical except for the placement of the cogs. Old belt cogs are on the inside and the new belt cogs are on the outside.

Never used a belt with a cog on an MGB...suppose it would depend on width & which side fits the groove of the pulleys.

To cog or not to cog, that is the question....

I've never used a belt with cogs on the outside, always inside. I would imagine the belt would bend better with cogs in, but I have no experience with whatever you have in your hands.

Like Tony, I rarely use cogged belts. They are fine for your car but on generator or older cars I greatly prefer solid.

Sorry this doesn't help much!

A pick of the "original" is below. Not quite sure how old it actualy is but I know for a fact it's at least 15 years old.

If you ever want to have fun got to vatozone pepboys etc and ask for a 965mm by 9.5 V belt. The look on there face is priceless and doesn't improve much when you convert it over to inches. For some reason my car does not match the book for belt lenth and the stock belt listed in moss/vb/vatozone is about an inch short.

Stewart,
Gorgeous MGB, and great color choice! I just found a website showing the new (?) Rover/MG and the updates you made look really similar to the car... not the new (Chinese/MG joint effort) TF, but I believe it is the MGR8, may not be in production, couldn't really tell if it is upcoming or already gone from the site I viewed.
Anyway, very nice restoration!

It's just a matter of how the manufacturer chose to make the belt. I doubt one way is any better than the other -- either type (or one without) will work equally well....

In that original belt pic, the cogs go in towards the pulleys - but cogs aren't necessary.

Same as Tony and Steve, I've never had a belt with cogs on it.

Cogs, or notches as they are also called, are basically a design method to allow the belt to more easily wrap around a pulley. Backside notches serve the same purpose I think, i.e., flexibility.
Typically they are found on belts for lawn & garden eqpt., not so much for automotive applications. Be careful if you are using an L & G belt on a fan belt drive. It may not be up to the task.
