On this day in History soldiers in the U.S. Army participated in action which yielded 20 medals of honor. Can anyone name the battle?

P.S. I do believe it is the single engagement to have the highest number of MOHs awarded.

Hi Walt - I'm thinking the Battle of Wounded Knee (December 29, 1890). But there's a *lot* of controversy over those medals. The event is sometimes referred to as the Massacre at Wounded Knee.

Happy new year to all!

Tom

Ding Ding that's correct Tom. Yes there is a lot of controversy surrounding those medals, and I personally feel they should all be stripped. Nowadays the sort of behaviour that earned them would get a serviceman a court martial, and time in the brig.

Iwo Jima, 27 MOHs. PJ

I didn't add, most posthumously, sorry to say.

Maybe I should have said the most awarded for one day's action, since Iwo can been seen as one massive battle lasting 35 days. All 20 medals awarded at Wounded Knee, were awarded for "heroism" that occurred on the 29th of Dec. 1890.
