Third brake light wiring

Got my 3rd brakelight assembly ready to install on my 72 TR6.
I have 3 wires to hook up.
Black -ground is no problem
Gray to tailight
Red to brake light.
What color do I hook up those last 2 to?

Roofman:

I just installed some tail light wiring a few hours ago.

In my wire harness, my red wire powers the tail lights
(running lights) and the green/white stripe wire is my
brake wire. Black is ground.

hope tis helps,
tinster

Dale, I'll guess that your replacement wire harness doesn't quite follow the original Lucas color codes? Green w/white would be for RH turn signals on an original; green w/purple would be for the brake lamp circuit.

Hey Andy,

Of course you are correct. I had them backwards in
my feeble mind. All three wires plus black run
across the trunk of my buggy.

Green w/ purple is brake
Green w/ white is RT turn
Red is running lights

Looking at Masters wire diagram, it only shows red for tailights, doesn't seem to show the brake lights. So for my set up I go gray to red. What about the brake light? Is Dale right about the green / purple?

Why would you have your third brake light connected to your tail lights? I thought it only operated with the brake, it's only on or off.

Joe,

Mine has three LED sets lit with the parking or headlamps on and all six LED sets light up with the brakes on.

Some newer units will even blink with your turn signals.

Well to all the Lister's. I understand fully the advantages of a Third tail/brake light. However, in these designs where is the backup. What operates the Stop light circuits if the brake light switch fails? Similarly, what operates them if there is a failure in the brake's hydraulic system ? You know you are limping home on the hand brake--Keoke--???

That's strange, my copy does.

Uh, that's where you remember back to the hand signals you learned many, many years ago. You know, the ones NO ONE seems to understand any more? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif

In that situation, unless you have a sidescreen car or other older car with a hydraulically actuated switch, the switch on the pedal will still work, even if the pedal does nothing to actuate the brakes at that point....

Well Andy, at least you realised the problem.--Keoke-- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Andy, What cars have the mechanical switch attached to the brake pedaal?___Keoke
