Setting up the distributer on my rebuilt 1275 engine I had bought new plug wires. The screws that hold the wires in the cap were frozen in place and I sheared the head off one of the screws. No problem I thought as I has a spare cap from my TR3A rebuild.
I had the distributer set in the correct location, fitted the cap and cut the wires to length. I was not really happy with the orientation of the cap to the engine so I thought I must have the drive gear off by a tooth. Removed the distributer and support then tried to get the drive gear out. On the TR3A it is a simple matter pulling up and turning it to the new location. As I started to pull it out I noticed it was getting crooked then it slipped into the sump. Had nor realized there was a thread at the bottom of the drive to assist the removal of the gear.
Sump came off again gear was reset and then I realized that the MG distributer cap and the TR cap are not clocked the same. There is a 90 degree difference in the caps.
1. The MG and Triumph caps are different.
2. Screw a 5/16" bolt into the distributer gear if you are pulling it out while you have the sump in position.

Your second hint: I've used a rearmost head stud for removing the dizzy drive gear, the fine thread end. Nice long "tool" for the extraction.
 
Who knew that sand blasting generates static electricity. Working on the inside of the bonnet with the sand blaster and my arm touched the metal and I got zapped.

Well, I know that but I forget most every time I stick my arm i there.
