Cheap screws made of soft mystery metal should be illegal. Furthermore, by law screws should always be of harder, stronger, material than any screwdriver bit.

(Just spent 20 minutes hanging a hook for a bird feeder. Three crummy screws.)

I've given up buying fasteners anywhere but at fastener
specialty stores. All the big name discount stores sell
junk metal.

They were the screws that came with it. I used them because their finish matched the hanger. I agree 100% re the chain hardware store fasteners and buy nuts & bolts by weight at an industrial supply place. I don't pay as much attention to my wood screw stash, though. I figure if I drill first etc etc.

I always go through my entire screwdriver drawer trying to find a scredriver that's close to the fitting on the screw....lots of them are not very deep.

Agreed- I just put up one of those neat hunter fans from costco on my garage ceiling. The screws that came with the mounting hardware stink. My weak drill removes the head about 1/4 " before they are tight with the ceiling. They should just tell you to supply your own......

I've found grade 8 bolts from most chain stores to be not much stronger than grade 5. The hardware boxes say China on them. That should have been a red flag I guess.

Same here. Why can't they all just be hex heads or even recessed allen heads?

When buying screws, I look for the ones made in Germany. They cost a little more, but their worth it. I think Home Depot sells them now and their usually in their own display. In fact, I think the last ones I bought were dyed blue.
