The Way It Was....

We still have one of these in our area that looks something like the Esso station. Once I get my interior back in i am going to take some pix of my 6 in front of it.

You forgot about the rack of state road maps. Bubble gum and peanut machines. What did we do on a Sunday if we were out of town and hungry?

On vacation awhile back we filled up at a station which claimed to have the oldest continually-operating gravity pumps (since the 20s I think). It's on the road into Kings Canyon Natl Park and worthy of a stop & your custom if you're passing that way.

Need to scroll thru those many images on that site to see if it's in there.

Got an old restaurant in a neighboring town that
cooked chicken old-fashioned. Sort of a tourist type
of place. Old town like from the days of cowboys, etc.

They have many old antiques that are for sale there because
they are going out of business. Saw an old oil tank,
maybe holds like 75 gallons of oil, they used to fill the
smaller quart-sized container with. My dad had some of
these in a gas station we owned when I was a kid.

Brings back memories.

Bryce Canyon Natl Park still has it's old gas station. No gas these days but the restrooms are open and feature some major porcelain and vintage Boraxo dispensers.

I tended a Texico station now and then in High School. Those days the snow tires wern't mounted on rims. Fall came and the regular tires had to come off the back and snow tires put on the rims. In spring the procedure was reversed. There wern't the machines to do the job then. Just tire irons and a rubber maul. Sure didn't care for that job. Also used to hang out at the Sinclar station and play cribbage with the owner. Much more inocent times.

In 1969 I was forced out of my gas station lease with a local oil retailer because I started selling milk, bread and snacks.

They told me I needed to stick to what the customers wanted...

Izzat you, George, standin' by a Sinclair green pump disguised as a modern logo Chevron dispenser?

...and that BORAXO dispenser tossed me into reverie!

THANKS!

Here's a video of that gravity pump in action. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

Boraxo! Haven't heard of that (or felt the grit or smelled the scent) in ages! Fantastic!

Now I want to find some again.

And Ronald Reagan would introduce "twenty mule team borax" for Death Valley Days every week.

memories ... memories

Tom

FYI -- Boraxo is still available. Our local grocery (Frys -- in the Kroger/City Mkt/King Sooper/etc corporation) orders it for me.

An old metal Boraxo can always sits by the sink around here -- have to refill it from those new-fangled cardboard & plastic containers they use now.

Oh yes, I remember Death Valley Days with the "old Ranger" and the twenty mule team. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

misquoting Edith Bunker as she played the piano and screeched: "Mister, we could use a man like Ronald Reagan again."

Thank you Edith. I agree.

I have the modern Boraxo in supply. The local grocery chain actually stocks it. 'smits uses it regularly in the laundry...
she's still gotta put up with my work-on-the-car clothes. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif
