Making good progress on the Tunebug's unwiring. Boy, are these cars small. I took the seats and frames out to make more room, but it's still quite the squeeze to work under the dash. I've got most of the dash unhooked now, and some switch gear is out for reconditioning. 2 questions for now:

1. How do I get the ignition/light switch out?

2. Do I have to drop the gas tank to get to the fuel level sender? Need to remove the wire, and the tank is only reading 1/4 full when it's completely full, so Im wondering if the sender is bad.

Drew, there is a wire clip on the back of the ignition switch, that has a small screw pinching it together. You have to loosen or remove the screw to remove the clip. Once that's out of the way, the switch just pulls out. It's easier to disconnect the wires once you have the switch pulled through the dash.
And, you have to drop the tank to get the sender out. Put the car on jack stands to give yourself removal room. There should be a drain plug at the bottom of the tank. Drain the fuel, and disconnect the fuel line. Remove the hose from the filler neck, at the tank, and the only thing holding the tank in now should be the welded mount bolts through the boot floor. There are 6 of them. Support the tank with a jack, remove the nuts from underneath, and drop the tank far enough to disconnect the wires. Once they are un-hooked, drop the tank the rest of the way.
Any spiders yet?

Hose on filler neck, really. Think not, gotya.

Jack, there's a short hose connecting the filler neck to the fuel tank. And, I changed my previous post when I remembered that the mount bolts are, (or should be,) welded through the boot floor. You only have to remove the nuts from below. It's been awhile since I've dropped a tank, but only about three months since I've changed an ignition switch.

Ben, maybe I'm confusing it with the early Spridgets. You guys are undoubtably right, and it's too cold for me to go check on a Bugeye tank right now.
Thanks for setting me straight.

Boy do I now wish I had thought things through before I filled the tank last. Oh well...

Had a good day with the Tunebug today. Got everything behind the dash unhooked and labeled. Tomorrow I'll draw some diagrams of the engine bay electrics, and get them all unhooked and labeled. I'm going with the super-anal approach, taking my time and enjoying the process. Though I'm glad to be done under the dash--I really don't fit all that well.

As for dropping the tank -- no big deal. 10 minutes and done. Any other car in the world and it's a project. 5 bolts and 1 "ring clamp". Try to make sure it's pretty empty -- use a fuel line off the pump if yours is electronic.

Sending units on ebay for $30 + shipping. Tighten the ground screw properly or it will give you fits (that why I did mine and was happy to find an "easy fix".

I did get the guage out (thanks for the instructions), but I'd love to speak with the person who designed the bitty little screw you have to undo way up behind the dash. Certainly didn't have a big guy like me in mind. Good thing I don't mind small spaces.

Oh, and no spiders so far... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
